Come home to a garden you love

As certified Georgia Master Gardeners, Julie and Linda have shared their knowledge and love of gardening with the community by speaking on a range of gardening topics to the UPCCA, area garden clubs, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, seniors groups, churches and individual homeowners associations. During the many years Linda and Julie have been working in the North Atlanta area, they have made it a point to volunteer their time to improve the quality of life in their community. They organized the Inside Gwinnett Garden Tour for 4 years, donating proceeds toward the Norcross Cooperative Ministry and local elementary schools. They have donated landscape designs for the Norcross Garden Club, Norcross United Methodist Church, Summerour Middle School and fundraisers at Mary our Queen, Greater Atlanta Christian and Norcross High Schools.  They designed and helped with the implementation of outdoor classrooms at Stripling and BB Harris Elementary schools and Cornerstone Christian Academy.  They have consulted with several Eagle Scouts in planning and executing their Eagle projects.  They also consulted on the layout and preparation of the Peachtree Corners Community Garden.  As a founding member of the Whistle Stop Farmers Market, Julie played a huge role in getting it started.  She is now an active member of the Norcross Tree Preservation Board. Linda played an advisory role on the Peachtree Parkway Improvement and Gateway Projects the UPCCA has undertaken to beautify the medians and shoulders along Rte. 141.  In spearheading the maintenance proposal process, she interviewed vendors, reviewed cost estimates and ensured the quality of their work.  Linda has recently been appointed to the Gwinnett County Tree Advisory Committee.

Julie and Linda come from a long line of gardeners from whom their passion for gardening blossomed.  What began as a hobby grew into a business as friends and neighbors in the Norcross area hired them to help them develop their gardens.  Years of experience gave these self-taught gardeners the knowledge and confidence that gardening in the hot humid South requires.  As their business grew, Julie and Linda furthered their education by becoming certified Gwinnett County Master Gardeners and attending horticulture and landscape design classes through Gwinnett Tech.  Julie and Linda have been co-owners of Gardens by Design for over a decade.

Since owning her own home, Julie has taken pleasure in creating an outdoor space that is an extension of her house.  Her Peachtree Corners garden was one of several landscapes featured on the spring 2004 Inside Gwinnett Garden Tour.  Her garden in Historic Norcross was featured on the 2010 and 2011 Gwinnett Master Gardener and 2011 Blossom Garden Tours.  In addition, her garden was featured in Georgia Gardening Magazine.  Julie also enjoys writing about gardening.  Her articles have been published in Georgia Gardening Magazine, Inside Gwinnett, and the Historic Norcross Times.  She is currently a contributing writer for The Norcross Patch.  Her articles can be found at  http://patch.com/users/julie-foster

Linda is a lifelong gardener. She has battled soil, weeds and weather in Chicago, Canada, Maryland and Georgia.  Her special interest is gardening in the shade of Atlanta’s native pines and deciduous trees. She is currently in the process of editing her maturing garden to become more low maintenance while continuing to be friendly to wildlife. Linda is an avid backyard birder. Her garden is an Advanced Certified National Wildlife Habitat and Atlanta Audubon Society Habitat.  It has been seen in Georgia Gardening Magazine, Inside Gwinnett, Creative Loafing Magazine and was featured on the 2004 Inside Gwinnett, 2011 Gwinnett Master Gardener and 2014 Atlanta Audubon Society Garden Tours.  Her most recent endeavor is participating in the Neighborhood NestWatch program. Visit Linda’s garden at the annual Gardens By Design plant sale each spring.
